Audrey Reid Composition Prize
In 2011 DYO is proud to announce a new award for young composers. This is an annual award for an orchestral composition with prize money donated by the Audrey Reid Charitable Trust. At the DYO May 24th concert the inaugural prize was awarded to Corwin Newall for 'Hang In There'. The prize was presented by Celia Reid and the piece will be performed at the DYO September 25 concert.
2011 Rules
- The aim is to foster and encourage orchestral composition for Youth Orchestras by local composers of a similar age. Entrants should be resident in Otago and Southland.
- The Prize is $1000 plus working with Musical Directors Anthony Ritchie and Peter Adams and having the piece performed by the DYO.
- Entries should be submitted by 15 April, 2011 and the winner will be announced in the May 24 DYO concert. The piece would be performed in the DYO September concert.
- Applicants should be in the same age range as for members of the Orchestra, ie under 25 years old at the closing date.
- The piece should be no more than 10 minutes and be for full symphony orchestra of the indicated instrumentation:
3.2.2.2/2.2 or 3.3.1/timpani.2 perc (note we have no marimba/xylophone player at present)/ Strings.
It should not be for a solo instrument with orchestra (e.g. a concerto) or include extended solo passages for any instrument. If you are unsure about instrumentation available please contact us.
- Entrants must submit two printed and notated full scores of their work under a nom de plume together with a separate envelope containing their real name and address and their nom de plume. The score may be accompanied by an audio CD of a midi performance but do not send Sibelius or other music notation program files.
- Peter Adams and Anthony Ritchie will adjudicate the award and the
top 3 selections will be considered by an independent assessor, along with Peter and Anthony, for a final decision.
- The winning composer must produce a set of orchestral parts for the players in time for the first rehearsal on July 15. These parts must include rehearsal marks, cues, page turns and correct transpositions. Ideally, the full score should be notated in C. Assistance with printing may be available from DYO.
- The judges' decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. DYO reserves the right not to award a prize in any particular year if the panel feels no piece warrants the award.
